A brief introduction
Gitzo, the internationally renowned manufacturer of professional camera tripods and heads, was founded in 1917 by Arsene Gitzhoven from whom the company derived the name. In those early days the company manufactured wooden and later, metal cassette filmbacks to fit many of the cameras manufactured in Europe.
In the mid 20's the company started to produce its own 6.5 x 9, 6.5 x 11 and even 24 x 36 box cameras called the Gilax range. As the photographic camera evolved, and went East, Gitzo phased out the production of cameras and concentrated its skills on precision manufactured accessories such as shutters, flash adapters, self timers and cable releases. The company only stopped production of many of these accessories in 1992 to direct all efforts on their camera tripod and head business which was expanding and has an established reputation as the best in the world.
The actual start of tripods and heads production goes back to the late 1940's when stability and durability were, and remain important qualities required of any camera support system. During the 2nd World War, the company also produced support systems for the military.
The company remained a family business run by Mrs Yvonne Pflieger, the daughter of the founder up until 1992 when the company was purchased by the Vitec Group PLC in the UK who also own Manfrotto, the other leading manufacturer of camera and lighting support systems. The declared policy of the Group is to maintain the two brands separate, from design solutions to production methods and facilities.
Product development has also been given a priority with the necessary funding. Gitzo was the first company in the photographic industry to introduce Carbon Fibre tripods and monopods. The principal advantage of carbon is that it is up to 30% lighter than conventional aluminium tripods without any adverse effect on stability and durability.
Gitzo has also set the standard others can only follow with the introduction of lightweight magnesium heads which offer up to 20% weight saving and are the ideal combination with the carbon fibre tripods.
The professional "Fluide" video head with purpose designed tripods is specifically designed for today's new lightweight digital and ENG cameras.
From the serious amateur to the professional, from 35mm to 10 x 8 format, there is a Gitzo product to match their needs exactly. The range includes 43 tripods, 9 monopods and 19 heads plus a full compliment of accessories.
Gitzo exports to over 45 countries around the world with their tripods and heads being the first choice by many leading professional photographers, be it in Tokyo, London, Paris, New York or Beijing. The Professionals' Choice!
